Enough online posts exist that tells how people have messed up their Xbox trying to fix error 13 xbox. For a softmod Xbox, Hotswap method is probably the cheapest and the best way to fix your problems. This method will allow you to reinstall the MS dashboard, to fix corrupted files, to back up and more.

Error 13 Xbox – What does hotswap do?

Your PC cannot read the Xbox's HDD because it is locked. So, the HDD needs to be unlocked prior to connecting it to the PC so that the xplorer360 can read the Xbox on the PC. As the explorer 360 is just like Windows explorer, you can easily copy and move files back and forth between your Xbox and your PC.

Error 13 Xbox – How does it work?

When the Microsoft logo appears under the big x after you turn on the Xbox, remove the IDE cable from the Xbox HDD and replace it with the IDE cable from your PC. Now run xplorer360 and go to drive->open->harddrive or memcard. You should see your Xbox HDD with 5 partitions. This whole process is called Hotswap.

Error 13 Xbox – Why would I want to hotswap?

Firstly, your Xbox is showing you error 13 xbox because you tried to do a softmod and got is messed up. With the Hotswap method, you will be able to istall the default MS dashboard files and repair your Xbox.

Secondly, If you want do a softmod but don't want to hack up a controller or buy an action replay, Hotswap method can help you to copy the hacked gamesaves and Linux files to your Xbox.

Thirdly, if you want to softmod your Xbox and do not want to spend money on games, Hotswap method is the answer.

Note On Error 13 Xbox

Disconnect the Xbox HDD IDE cable just before it goes to error 13 xbox. Also, you can try to boot up Xbox with an original game inside the disk drive to see if the Microsoft logo shows up. And you can always do Hotswap in the above mentioned method.

You can actually build a new HDD by using xboxhdm if you have the original eeprom on your PC.

Error 13 Xbox – Does your xbox qualify to do hotswap?

Hotswap is always possible.

To see if your Xbox qualifies, turn on the Xbox without a game disk, if you see the white Microsoft logo under the big X and Xbox then your Xbox qualifies for Hotswap.

If no Microsoft logo appears then your Xbox may not be Hotswapped. However, you can still do it by disconnecting the IDE cable from Xbox HDD just before your Xbox goes into the service screen. You can also try to disconnect the IDE cable from Xbox's DVD drive and then attempt a Hotswap.

Alternatively, you can load an original Xbox game and do the Hotswap when the Microsoft logo shows up.

Basically, you can do Hotswap method in three different ways:

hotswap with no game inside DVD drive

hotswap with an original game inside DVD drive

hotswap with IDE cable disconnected from DVD drive
